New €2.8m project will seek insights into aging from pre-term births

The European Research Council (ERC) today announced the winners of its 2021 Advanced Grants competition. I am pleased that my proposal entitled PRETERM-LIFECOURSE: Born very preterm: A natural experiment of how early adversity and social environment affect Life course development has received funding.

I am over the moon with the good news. The Euro 2.8 million will provide the resources to support me and my team at the University of Warwick and collaborators in Germany over the next 5 years. I will investigate whether ageing is already partly determined at the time of birth. Is the speed of development altered after preterm birth and has trade-offs in terms of early ageing and for reproduction and offspring? How do social factors protect against premature ageing, something I call social neuroprotection.
